Windows to the Soul Bowl

Transparent, pastel windows, reminiscent of eyes, provide a window for light to shine through. Creamy vanilla geometrics flow through and divide quadrants of blue pastel and feisty coral.

The luminous eyes are composed of glass cylinders, which are sections individually cut from hand-pulled glass cane, which I create by heating glass to 1500 degrees and pulling it into rods while molten in a modern-day adaptation of the 16th-century techniques of the Murano glassmakers. Blending opalescent white and cream glass with transparent aquamarine, blue, and glittering threads of glass in each murrine, you can look through these windows. The striped geometric portions are dozens of thin stripes of glass, set on edge. Components are fired separately in the kiln, cold worked to fit together with crisp corners and intersections, then fired again to join into a single mass.

Fused, cold worked and slumped.

Finding the right size stand can be a process of trial and error! To display your bowl standing up, I recommend this acrylic stand you can order from Amazon. It’s just deep enough to let the bowl tilt back a little bit for stability.
