Poetry of Glass at the Sandy Spring Museum
My Amber Vanilla Interlocking Bowl and Caramel Vanilla Bowl will appear in the Poetry of Glass exhibit at the Sandy Spring Museum in April. The exhibit is on display from March 29 to April 27, 2023, with a reception on April 2.
The Poetry of Glass is a showcase of works by members of the National Capital Art Glass Guild, featuring works by more than 40 glass artists across all aspects of the medium, from “cold” glass (stained) to “warm” glass (fused) to “hot” glass (blown).
Their art illustrates the range of this amazing material: translucent and opaque, colorful, joyful and mysterious, responsive to gravity and variations in heat in ways that are often unpredictable. Exhibitors have studied with nationally and internationally recognized masters and include gallery owners, scientists, and educators. Works on display range from purely decorative and fine art to functional and architectural pieces. Like poets, members find their inspiration in nature, science, history, music, fabric, rhythm, abstraction, emotion, geometry, organic matter, and more. They are constantly experimenting, exploring, and inventing new techniques.
During the exhibition period there will be opportunities to learn about the many forms of glass art: blown, fused, mosaic, and stained glass.
About The Artists
The National Capital Art Glass Guild (NCAGG) was founded in 1978 as a community of artisans interested in stained glass. As the glass arts have expanded, the Guild and the interests of its members have grown to include any and all forms of glass art, including but not limited to blown, mosaic, kiln-formed (fused), and lamp-worked glass. Through meetings, workshops, presentations, and exhibitions, the NCAGG provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences and promotes in the community at large all aspects of glass as an art and craft.
Participating member artists include Kate Barfield, Tracey Bosworth, Elaine Byergo, Regine Camacho, Mimi Cameron, Lani Clark, Anne Clark, Patricia de Poel Wilberg, Kristin Ellis, Ginger Ferrell, Jessica FitzGerald, Tamah Graber, Graciela Granek, Judy Gregurich, Margaret Halpin, Sarah Hammack, Merrilee Harrigan, Shayna Heller, John Henderson Jr., Carolyn Hill, Amoretta Hoeber, Katherine June Siena Hubley, Allan Jaworski, Marty Kremer, Andrew Lang, Betsy Mead, Nikki O’Neill, Sarah Pick, Doris Ross, Jill Russ, Sherry Selevan, Lynda Slayen, Lauren Madsen Snarr, Becky Snider, Maureen Storey, Lynne Taraken, Katherine Thomas, Karen Wallace, Robert Wiener, Janet Wittenberg, and Amy Wolverton.
Evoking the glory of autumn, bold swaths of red and vanilla-bronze glass interlock at the heart of this bowl, surrounded by a sea of amber with delicate cream swirls. Windows of clear interspersed within the vanilla-bronze stripes allow light to shine through despite the heft and solidity. Read more about this piece.
Practically edible, this luscious combination of caramel and vanilla glass with inky black highlights is topped with a grid of meandering glass threads with a hand-drawn feel. Read more about this piece.
